Los Vascos wines try to bring a bit of the Lafite tradition to the terroir of Chile, which means hoping for elegance and finesse over powerful fruit and spice. In a way, this is the case with this Gran Reserva. The property is the vision of Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite, who arrived in Chile in 1988, almost a century after Chile sent vines to Bordeaux to resuscitate its vineyards after phylloxera. It was the first French viticultural investment in modern Chile. Los Vascos is located in Valle de Caneten inside the Colchagua, 40 kilometres from the sea. With 1,581 acres planted on the over 10,000-acre estate, it is one of the most extensive vineyards in the central Colchagua Valley, at the foot of Mount Cañeten. The blend is 88% cabernet sauvignon, 10% syrah, and 2% carménère. It was a warm year, but as is the case most of the time, the grapes were blessed by an equally cool night. Los Vascos wines are made in the Bordeaux way. After malolactic fermentation, 50% of the wine is transferred into French oak barrels for 12 months. The nose is intense, mixing cherries and plums with blackcurrants and a savoury and spicy clove underside. The tannins are rich and dense but well-rounded. You can drink this now with a grilled steak, but another year or two in the bottle will only enhance your absolute pleasure. The Croma's name is said to be inspired by the colours of nature, the soil, and the terroir.
