Claudio Tipa from Rome is now a star in the Tuscan wine world. His oenological adventure started in 1998 with the Collemassari estate, passing through the famous Bolgheri Grattamacco and today arriving at the Ilcinese pearl Poggio di Sotto. The Maremma property is located in Cingiano, one of the most important places in the Montecucco DOC area, in a unique position, where the scent of the sea blends with the fresh air coming from Mount Amiata, and a thousand hectares of woodland surround the property set on high ground 320 metres above sea level. Across the valley from Collemassari one can peer down into Montalcino, whose terroir is not so different from that of the future DOCG of the Grosseto area, a corner of wine-growing paradise that is making a name for itself in the world of fine drinking. The Sangiovese Lombrone Riserva is by now a classic of the denomination, and in the 2009 version it rewards the winery's efforts with well-blended earthy aromas and a balanced mouthfeel to the micron, but what is most impressive is the ability of the winery staff to succeed in exploiting the Vermentino grape a little 'out of the zone', the Irisse in fact being in dazzling form.
