Chateau Bellefont-Belcier is a powerful, generous red wine with beautiful structure and striking freshness. The wine blend includes Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes, grown on the southern slopes of Laurent-De-Combe. The vineyard with an area of 13.5 hectares is divided into three separate areas by soil type: calcareous plateau, clay-limestone southern slope,
clay-sand areas. The average age of vines is about 35 years. Harvest times are determined individually for each site depending on the optimal maturity of the berries. The harvest is harvested by hand and carefully sorted twice: in the vineyard and in the winery.
Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature in concrete containers for about 30 days without the addition of sulfur, the minimum dose is added only at the end of aging. Apple and milk frothing takes place in barrels, some of which are new, but no more than 30%. Then the wine is aged in them for 15-18 months.
Before drinking the wine, decanting is strongly recommended
The Bellefont-Belcier estate, built at the end of the 18th century, is located on the southern slopes of Saint-Emilion, in the neighborhood of Chateau Pavie, Chateau Larcis Ducasse and Chateau Tertre Roteboeuf. Chateau Bellefont-Belcier originally belonged to a very influential family in Bordeaux.
At the end of the 18th century, Count Louis-Francois de Belcier first planted a vineyard, and at the beginning of the 19th century he built a castle, which he called Bellefon. Belle Fontaine means "beautiful fountain" and is a reference to the numerous springs hidden on the hillside into which the roots of the vines are cut. The castle passed into the hands of the Faure family at the end of the 19th century.
It was at this time that the wines from the vintages of the Chateau Bellefonte Belcier vineyard received many awards, including a gold medal in Bordeaux at the Paris Competition in 1892. At the same time, the vineyard and winery were reconstructed by one of Pierre Faure's sons, an agronomist who designed the famous circular vat that has survived, which is still one of the jewels of the estate.
