In many modern frame designs, the headset bearings are located in the head tube of the frame. After decades of producing headsets with pressed-in bearings, Chris King now had to produce headsets that fit into these newer frames.
From the outset, Chris King realised that integrated headsets present a particular challenge, as the bearings are not pressed into a shell and are therefore loose in the frame. If the bearings are not firmly pressed into a shell, they shift and quickly lose preload. When the preload drops, the bearings are more susceptible to creaking, damage and failure. This is a problem that Chris King knows how to solve.
This is where Chris King's patented GripLock™ bearing cap comes into play. The GripLock™ system preloads the headset independently of the clamp on the steerer tube, so it maintains preload much better than the competition and is impervious to the negative effects of peak loads from big hits and heavy braking. This means smoother steering behaviour, no more creaking and a longer headset life.
Chris King's GripLock™ design also makes preloading a headset a breeze, as the preload force of the bearing is independent of the clamping force. Chris King headsets can be preloaded to a specific torque.
