William Teacher, the future founder of William Teacher & Sons Ltd., began his business in 1830 in Glasgow, marrying the daughter of a grocery store owner. The teacher quickly showed a knack for business management and convinced his father-in-law to get a liquor license and convert the store into a “dram shop,” a tavern with strict rules. It was forbidden to have loud conversations in the tavern, uncivil behavior was not allowed, and very drunk customers were mercilessly removed from the establishment. Over the next 20 years, William's Tavern was the largest in the city.
Soon his sons, Adam and William Jr., began to help their father. Like many merchants of the time, Teacher became involved in targeted whiskey sales, offering specific blends to different categories of customers. After William died in 1876,
his sons moved the company's head office to a respectable mansion located on St. Enoch one of the central squares of Glasgow.
The office was located there until 1991. Now this 19th-century architectural monument is known as the "Teacher's Building" - a reception house in which every corner is dedicated to whiskey.
